HARTFORD, CT — On a day to commemorate women’s suffrage, a bipartisan group of state leaders celebrated the progress women have made over the last 100 years in the state, but agreed that more work remains to be done.
“We have come a long way since 1920, and I’m proud to say that Connecticut is a leader on women’s issues across the country,” Lt. Gov Susan Bysiewicz said to the state constitutional officers, department commissioners and legislators gathered at the Legislative Office Building Wednesday to celebrate Women’s Equality Day, the date when women gained the right to vote in 1920.
Bysiewicz noted that nearly half of the state’s agencies are led by women, and that women make up 30% of the state’s Senate and 37% of the House of Representatives. She also highlighted some of the laws passed over the years that have benefited women, such as paid family leave and increases to the minimum wage.
“While we all know there’s more to do, I am very proud to continue this work alongside this group of women, and I’m happy that we have bipartisan support today because we couldn’t do this work without the support of both parties,” she said.
