Michael Wright, 70, died on August 19. The actor and father had a decades-long career.
Wright’s family issued a statement confirming his passing to TMZ. Wright’s cause of death was a combination of heart failure and complications from a rare neurological condition called Marchiafava-Bignami.
The Statement from His Family
Wright is survived by his wife, Susan Wright, his children, and their extended family. Susan shared a statement about his passing on her Instagram page. “Michael was a husband, a father, Manon Wright, Byron Barr, Brittney Briggs, Brianna Barr, Sir Barr, a grandfather (Yoko), loved one, a friend, and an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations,” she wrote. “His talent, presence, and contributions to film and television will live on, but to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for.”
Celebrity deaths can cause speculation. Susan continued her statement by requesting privacy. “Our family is grieving an enormous and deeply personal loss. We understand how much Michael meant to so many people, and we are grateful for the love, prayers, memories, and condolences already being shared. We respectfully ask the public, members of the media, and those who knew and admired Michael to please allow our family the privacy and grace to grieve during this incredibly difficult time.”
She concluded with a sweet tribute to her late husband. “Michael, your work will live forever, but your love will live even longer in the hearts of those who knew you best. Rest peacefully, my love. You will be missed beyond words.”
Wright’s Impactful Career
Wright portrayed Eddie King, Jr., in Robert Townsend’s The Five Heartbeats. Based on the intense drama behind musical groups, the project became a cult classic. It frequently runs on channels like BET. Many snow days and sick days were filled with hours of watching Wright transform into a troubled lead singer. It gave generations endless quotables before anyone knew what a meme was.
His other notable roles included Raynathan Skuggs in 1994’s Sugar Hill, and Renee Mazli in 1996’s New York Undercover. He played Omar in the critically acclaimed HBO prison drama OZ. He starred in his breakout role as Clinton in 1979’s The Wanderers.
The characters he portrayed reflected some of society’s darkest elements with grace and empathy. He ensured they were complex and thoughtfully crafted.
Wright’s gifts also helped him build fantasy worlds. He appeared in the supernatural CW hit Black Lightning and made voice contributions to the Batman: Dark Tomorrow video game.
Wright found his acting career deeply rewarding. “The thing I longed for the most was when I knew that the audience was so captivated that I could hear the chairs creak as they were bending forward with anticipation. That is the most fulfilling moment; it’s incredible. You’ve captivated them, you’ve bonded with them, and they are hanging on your every emotion. That’s powerful,” he told Sheen Magazine in 2021.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Heart failure happens when the heart cannot pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs in your body.” It affects over six million Americans annually. Americans have a higher rate of heart failure than many other nations. Hundreds of thousands of Americans die of heart failure annually.
Comorbidities like Marchiafava-Bignami can increase the chances of experiencing heart failure. The Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology published several clinical studies in 2025 highlighting how Marchiafava-Bignami can interact with other conditions.
What is Marchiafava-Bignami?
Marchiafava-Bignami is a rare neurological disorder. It affects the corpus callosum, the part of the brain that allows the left and right hemispheres to communicate effectively. There is no cure for Marchiafava-Bignami.
It can impact any demographic, but it is frequently diagnosed in middle-aged men.
Multiple potential causes of Marchiafava-Bignami exist, and it can present as secondary to other conditions, according to Cureus. Select research cases have connected it to poor metabolic health and nutritional deficiencies.
How Common Is Heart Failure In The Black Community?
“Compared with other race/ethnic groups, Black patients have the highest incidence and prevalence of heart failure (HF) as well as the worst clinical outcomes,” According to the American Heart Association Journal. Black patients are more likely to die from cardiac events as well.
