Quinnipiac Poll: Men, Women, Democrats, Independents Think Renee Good Shooting Not Justified, Republicans Approve

HAMDEN, CT — More than 80% of registered voters have seen video of a masked ICE agent shooting Renee Good to death in Minneapolis, and a majority think the shooting was unjustified, according to the results of a Quinnipiac University poll released January 13.

According to the poll, 82% of voters had seen the video. By a 53% to 35% margin, voters said the shooting was not justified, although 12% said they had no opinion.

A majority of registered Democrats (92-4) and independent voters (59-28), along with women (61-30) and men (44-42) all said the shooting was not justified. Republicans by a 77-10 margin said the shooting was justified.

On the topic of immigration in general, Americans by a 57-40 margin disapproved of the way ICE is operating. Again, majorities of Democrats (94-4), independents (64-43), women (63-34) and men (50-48) disapproved of ICE’s tactics, while Republicans (84-12) approved. This result is essentially unchanged since the school polled the same topic in July.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem earned a 36% approval rating from voters, with 52% disapproving. Again, Republicans were the only group to approve of Noem, with 77% approval among party members compared to 12% disapproval. Democrats (85-4), independents (57-30), women (56-31) and men (46-43) disapproved. This is a drop from July, when 39% of voters approved of Noem’s performance compared to 50% disapproval.

According to the university, the poll results were based on a survey of 1,133 self-identified registered voters nationwide from January 8 – 12 with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points, including the design effect. Surveys adhere to industry best practices and are based on probability-based samples using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell phones, according to poll director Doug Schwartz.
