PLANT THE SEED FOR A GREAT SUMMER: BRIDGEPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY LAUNCHES SUMMER READING

Bridgeport, CT (June 22, 2026) – _As summer begins, the Bridgeport Public Library (BPL) is inviting residents of all ages to cultivate a love of reading through its 2026 Summer Reading Program, “Plant A Seed, Read.” Beginning June 22, library branches throughout the city will offer engaging reading challenges, educational activities, and special events designed to inspire curiosity and lifelong learning. The program is free and welcomes readers of all ages regardless of residency.

The 2026 theme, “Plant A Seed, Read,” is inspired by the idea that farms nourish our bodies while libraries nourish our minds. Just as a seed grows with care and attention, reading helps ideas, creativity, and understanding take root and flourish. Through books and shared stories, readers can explore different cultures, discover new interests, learn about the world around them, and build connections with their community. This summer, Bridgeport Public Library invites residents of all ages to plant the seeds of curiosity and see where reading can take them.

BPL is also proud to support the Connecticut Governor’s Summer Learning Challenge, celebrating its 30th anniversary, and has many of the recommended summer reading titles available across its branches and digital collections. Families are encouraged to visit their local library to borrow books from the Governor’s Summer Reading Lists and keep readers engaged throughout the summer months.

In addition to discovering great books, participants can earn prizes, incentives, and entries into special drawings throughout the summer. Readers of all ages will have opportunities to complete challenges, participate in library activities, receive promotional items, and celebrate reading achievements, making the Summer Reading Program educational and fun. Grand prizes for children, teens, and adults will be awarded at the conclusion of the program in early September.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the community back for another exciting summer of reading and discovery,” said Elaine Braithwaite, City Librarian. “This year’s theme reminds us that every book, every story, and every visit to the library plants a seed that can grow into knowledge, creativity, and opportunity. We encourage residents of all ages to join us this summer and explore everything their library has to offer.”
