The state Department of Correction is investigating the death of an incarcerated person at Osborn Correctional Institution this morning.
According to the department, at approximately 8:13 a.m. on May 21, 2026, a medical emergency code was called for an incarcerated individual who was in respiratory distress. The man, later identified as Daniel Serrano, 62, of Bridgeport, was housed in the Osborn Correctional Institution’s infirmary at the time of the incident.
Responding staff immediately initiated emergency and life-saving measures and paramedics from a local ambulance company arrived at the scene to transport Serrano to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:16 a.m.
Serrano had most recently entered the Department of Correction system on July 3, 2025, and was serving a two-year sentence on assault charges, according to the state Judicial Department’s website. The Connecticut State Police and the Office of the Inspector General are investigating the death.
The exact cause of death will be determined by the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
