Former U.S. President Barack Obama made a stop in Texas on Tuesday to rally behind Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico, giving a high-profile endorsement to a campaign Democrats believe could shake up the state’s long-standing Republican dominance.
Obama reportedly joined Talarico and Democratic state Representative Gina Hinojosa for lunch at a taco restaurant in Austin, where the former president sought to energize both statewide campaigns ahead of crucial elections. Hinojosa is attempting to unseat Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
The visit emphasized Obama’s growing focus on elevating younger Democratic voices across the country. In recent weeks, he has also appeared alongside Zohran Mamdani in the Bronx during an event centred on expanding free child care initiatives.
Obama had already signalled his admiration for Talarico earlier this year during a podcast appearance, where he described the Texas lawmaker as a “terrific, really talented young man.” Hinojosa also revealed in a Facebook post that Obama personally called her in March to congratulate her on her campaign.
Talarico has drawn national interest for blending progressive politics with a Christian-centered message, an approach that has helped him stand out in the race. He is expected to face either Ken Paxton or incumbent Senator John Cornyn, who are set to battle in a Republican runoff on May 26.
