Owners of 400 vehicles with potential tax liability to be notified of required action or risk further penalty.
New Haven, CT – On Monday morning with tax season underway,Mayor Justin Elicker will announce that the City of New Haven is stepping up compliance and enforcement efforts to ensure that motor vehicle owners are properly registering their vehicles and paying their annual motor vehicle tax to the City of New Haven.
As defined by Connecticut General Statute 12-71, registered or unregistered vehicles are taxable to the town where the vehicle most frequently leaves from and returns to. The Department of Assessment has identified an initial list of approximately 400 vehicles that may not be properly registered in New Haven, and instead inappropriately registered out of state or with other municipalities. Beginning this week, letters will be mailed to inform these vehicle owners of their potential unpaid tax liability and the actions required to come into compliance. Additional field work will also soon begin, which will identify other potential noncompliant vehicles.
New Haven’s Grand List includes nearly 58,000 taxable motor vehicles with an average motor vehicle tax bill of $328.
