Inmate Injures Whalley Jail Staffers

A healthcare worker fell to the ground at the Whalley Avenue jail after an incarcerated person struck them in the back of the head after a medical evaluation on Monday.

The state Department of Correction (DOC) provided that information in a Monday night press release, stating that at around 11:35 a.m., the incarcerated person ran towards the employee and struck them in the back of the head.

Correctional staff proceeded to “secure” and “remove him from the area,” and, according to the DOC, the injured healthcare worker was taken via ambulance to a hospital. Two of the responding correctional officers also sustained injuries and were sent to “an area clinic” for treatment.

State police are investigating the incident. As the investigation is ongoing, the DOC is not releasing the identity of the incarcerated person or the staffers.

“It is deeply upsetting when an employee is subject to violence while carrying out their  duties, particularly an employee whose role is to provide care to those in our custody,” Interim Commissioner Sharonda Carlos is quoted in the press release as saying.

Carlos has served as interim commissioner of the DOC since embattled former state Commissioner of Correction Angel Quiros retired in May of this year after six years in the role.

“I am grateful for the compassion, courage, and professionalism our healthcare and correctional staff exemplify, and I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure their safety,” she continued.
