Protesters are expected to gather at the Capitol and across Connecticut on Monday for Labor Day rallies throughout the day.

The protests, themed “Workers Over Billionaires,” are part of a nationwide effort to bring together community members in support of constitutional values and opposition to authoritarianism, organizers said.

Organizers are listed as the group May Day Strong, but local groups in Connecticut are also stepping up to coordinate some of the events. In Torrington, for example, Northwest CT Take Action is partnering with other pro-democracy organizations, they said, to host a nonviolent protest on the sidewalk by Coe Memorial Park starting at 11 a.m.

Events start as early as 8 a.m. in Newtown and continue until 4 p.m. in East Lyme.

The Hartford protest is scheduled to start at noon on Sept. 1 outside the State Capitol, 210 Capitol Ave.

“This Labor Day we will continue to stand strong, fighting for public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, shared prosperity over corporate politics,” event organizers said.  “Working people built this nation and we know how to take care of each other. We won’t back down—we will never stop fighting for our families and the rights and freedoms that ensure access to opportunity and a better life for all Americans.”

Northwest CT Take Action said in a statement that the protests are about standing strong against “billionaire exploitation and corporate domination.”

“Working people, parents, students, and community members will rise in every corner of the country to continue the fight for dignity, justice, and public investment in our lives, not billionaire empires,” the group said in a news release. “The billionaire’s time is up.”

Those attending the protests are encouraged to bring American flags, wear patriotic colors and bring signs supporting democracy.

“Together we will demand a world that works for all of us,” organizers said.
