Tong, Thomas, Scanlon, Russell Win Re-Election In CT

by Staff Report

Several Democratic incumbents won re-election to statewide offices Tuesday, preliminary vote totals show.

Attorney General William Tong, a Democrat cross endorsed by the Working Families Party who has vowed to keep fighting rules imposed by the Trump administration, defeated Republican challenger John Bolton, who had promised to stop the state’s lawsuits against the president if he were elected.

The race was called around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, with about 59% of votes counted and Tong leading 489,530 votes to Bolton’s 306,228.

Tong has served as Connecticut’s attorney general since 2019. Prior to that, he was a state representative for 12 years.

Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, a Democrat who also appeared on the Working Families Party and Independent Party ballot lines, won re-election against Republican challenger Peter Lumaj, who has previously run for that seat unsuccessfully as well as the U.S. Senate.

Thomas has served as the state’s top election official since 2023. Before that, she was a state representative, nonprofit adviser and small business owner.

Treasurer Erick Russell, a Democrat cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party, defeated challenger Fred Wilms, a Republican who was also on the Independent Party ballot line.

Russell has served as Connecticut’s treasurer since 2023. Before that, he worked as an attorney at Pullman & Comley.

Comptroller Sean Scanlon, a Democrat cross-endorsed by both the Working Families Party and the Independent Party, defeated Republican challenger Jennifer S. Tooker, a fiscal conservative who previously ran for governor.

Scanlon has served in his role since 2023. Prior to that, he was a state representative for eight years.
