The 49th annual Faxon Law New Haven Road Race brought about 6,000 runners onto the streets of New Haven Monday. They came from around the country and, in some cases, around the world. Organizers said it was one of the race’s biggest turnouts in years.
The Labor Day race is one of those events that has become part of New Haven. The Green fills up early, runners take over streets throughout the city and spectators line parts of the course to watch them go by.
This year’s events included a 5K, half marathon, half marathon relay, kids fun run and the 20K, which again served as the USA Track & Field 20K National Championship.
The longer races started and finished on the New Haven Green, with the courses passing through several parts of the city, including Westville, Fair Haven, and East Rock.
New Haven has hosted the men’s national 20K championship since 1993 and the women’s championship since 2006, making it the longest-running USATF national championship.
Kieran Tuntivate, a Thai-American distance runner and two-time Olympian, won the 20K in 58:01. Rachel Rudel of Colorado was the women’s winner, finishing in 1:04:08.
