The red neon sign reading “Let’s Eat” still glimmers faintly in the window of Donut Crazy’s York Street storefront — but not a whole lot of eating is happening inside there these days.
On March 5, the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) suspended the New Haven branch of the Stratford-based donutery’s license to do business, shuttering its doors at 290 York St. for the last two and a half weeks.
According to a yellow posting on the front door of the shop, Donut Crazy’s “sales and use tax permit” was revoked “pursuant to section 12 – 409(f) of the Connecticut General Statute.” The provision allows the state to yank the permit for violations of sales tax laws once DRS’s commissioner has held a hearing on the issue after giving the business 10 days notice to appear.
DRS told the Independent that provisions of relevant state law prohibit the office from “disclos[ing] taxpayer information” and, therefore, providing additional context on the suspension.
Donut Crazy’s owner, Jason Wojnarowski, declined to comment.
