On Sunday, July 12, Sisters of the Modern Scholar (SOTMS) proudly hosted its inaugural initiative, marking a powerful and inspiring beginning for this collective. This special event celebrated and supported graduating seniors from New Haven who are preparing to begin their college journeys this fall.
As part of the initiative, 50 thoughtfully curated college-ready baskets were prepared and
distributed to participating students. These baskets were filled with essential items to support their transition into college life. In a true demonstration of community collaboration, every aspect of the event was made possible through generous donations.
The event was hosted at Tia Russell Arts Center, with the space, baskets, and all items within them donated by local organizations, businesses, and community partners. Food and refreshments were also generously provided, including sweet treats from a local baker.
The event was filled with joy, gratitude, and community pride. Attendees included the student recipients, their families, and representatives from the many businesses and organizations that contributed to the initiative. A live DJ added to the celebratory atmosphere, while guests enjoyed connecting, celebrating, and capturing memorable moments in front of the event display.
We were especially honored to welcome New Haven Chief of Police, David Zannelli, who joined us in support of the initiative. He shared encouraging words with the students and took time to mingle and take photos with attendees, further uplifting the spirit of the event.
In an added highlight, a photographer from the NHPD graciously attended and captured the event, later creating a beautiful video that will serve as a lasting memory of this meaningful day.
The appreciation expressed by the students and their families was heartfelt and evident throughout the event. It was a meaningful opportunity to uplift and encourage these young scholars as they take their next steps toward higher education.
Sisters of the Modern Scholar is honored to have played a role in supporting these students and looks forward to continuing this impactful work for years to come. This inaugural event set a strong foundation for future initiatives dedicated to empowering and investing in the success of New Haven’s youth.
