La Voz Hispana Publisher Norma Rodriguez-Reyes has a new title to add to her resume: Hall of Famer.

The Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) formally inducted New Havener Rodriguez-Reyes into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame during an awards ceremony held Wednesday night at the Farmington Gardens banquet facility.

The organization honored Rodriguez-Reyes for rescuing the New Haven-based weekly newspaper from bankruptcy in 1998 then continuing to publish it decades later and to innovate at a time when newspapers around the country have withered and closed. She was also honored for her work the past 21 years as chair of the board of the nonprofit Online Journalism Project, which publishes the New Haven Independent and Valley Independent Sentinel, operates the bilingual radio station WNHH FM (in conjunction with La Voz), and supports local news reporting and arts reviewing in 12 communities across the country.

SPJ cosponsored the event with the CT Council on Freedom of Information, which honored New Haven State Rep. Roland Lemar and Groton State Sen. Heather Somers for beating back efforts to weaken the state Freedom of Information Act (FOIA); Comptroller Sean Scanlon for opposing state university officials’ efforts to withhold information about official misconduct; Inside Investigator reporter Katherine Revello for her use of and reporting on the FOIA; and Colleen Murphy, who has retired after serving 35 years at the Freedom of Information Commission. (Click here to read and watch a WNHH interview with Murphy about her work there.) SPJ also handed out awards to journalists from throughout the state (including the Independent) for news coverage.
