Voters are opening up their wallets to support all three Democrats vying for a west-side state representative seat, according to the first round of campaign finance reports filed in the race.

Those three reports — which were all filed in advance of an April 10 state deadline — show incumbent Pat Dillon in the fundraising lead, with challengers Eli Sabin and Justin Farmer not far behind.

Dillon, 77, is seeking a 22nd two-year term as the representative for the 92nd district seat in the House of Representatives.

Sabin, a 26-year-old former Downtown/East Rock alder, and Farmer, a 31-year-old former Hamden Legislative Council member, are seeking to unseat Dillon in what’s shaping up to be New Haven’s only contested state legislative primary this year.

According to the three candidates’ first-quarter campaign finance reports, Dillon raised a total of $9,585 between Jan. 1 and April 6; Sabin raised a total of $8,585.36 between Jan. 6 and April 7; and Farmer raised a total of $7,595 between Jan. 13 and March 31.

All three candidates intend to participate in the state’s public-financing program, which requires candidates to raise a total of $6,700 in small-dollar donations — of between $5 and $340 — from at least 150 residents of municipalities included in their district. For the 92nd district — which covers covers Westville, Amity, Edgewood, West River, Dwight, and the Hill — that means candidates can raise qualifying donations from anyone in New Haven.

Each candidate in this 92nd-district race who qualifies for the voluntary Citizens’ Election Program (CEP) would receive $38,575 in state grants.

According to those same first-quarter filings, Dillon’s campaign has spent $0 so far; Sabin’s campaign has spent $4,376.12; and Farmer’s campaign has spent $507.32.
