HARTFORD, CT — Protesters shouting through bullhorns and motorists replying with car horns caused quite a ruckus Thursday at the state Capitol as hundreds of protesters took part in a series of rallies.
Starting around noon, several hundred members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1199 marched around the Capitol. Clad in purple shirts and waving yellow union flags, the group wound its way through the various exterior porticos before settling in on the Capitol’s south side.
On Capitol Avenue, protesters lined both sides of the street as they waved signs and chanted slogans. Most of the signs targeted President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans, although there also was a smattering of support for environmental causes and worker unions.
May 1, or May Day, also known as International Workers Day, is a public holiday in over 80 countries. It is generally considered a day to celebrate the contribution of workers and commemorate the labor movement.
Nationally, hundreds of rallies were planned to protest the policies of Trump and Elon Musk. The rallies were expected to draw thousands of protesters in various cities across the country.
