NEW MILFORD — The chairperson of New Milford‘s Republican Party confirmed it is exploring the feasibility of forming a Turning Point USA chapter for high school students.

Local activists, meanwhile, blasted that effort, describing Turning Point as a group that’s not being sought by local youth, while also criticizing Turning Point’s overall rhetoric as homophobic and racist.
The organization was founded in 2012 by the late Charlie Kirk, a political activist who was known just as much for his deeply conservative, and often controversial, views as well as his staunch advocacy of free speech. Kirk was assassinated in 2025 while speaking on a college campus in Utah.
Turning Point’s self-described mission is “to identify, educate, train and organize students to promote the principles of freedom, free markets and limited government,” the organization said in a press kit. A media representative for Turning Point did not respond to emailed requests for comment.
“Turning Point USA believes that every young person can be enlightened to true free market values,” the organization said in the press kit, adding that it “has embarked on a mission to build the most organized, active, and powerful conservative grassroots activist network on high school and college campuses across the country.”
Turning Point USA now has a presence on more than 3,000 college and high school campuses across the United States, the organization said.
Lynn Umbarger, chairwoman of the New Milford Republican Town Committee, was brief in an emailed response to questions about the effort to form a local chapter of the group.
“Right now, it is still being investigated as to whether launching a regional TP USA group is feasible, so I am not prepared to make any comment at this time other than to say if such a group were to be formed, it would have no affiliation with any public or private school or school system,” Umbarger said in her email.
