In celebration of 57 years on Sargent Drive, New Haven’s Long Wharf Theatre staff will host a block party on Saturday marking the start of its next chapter.
The regional theater announced in February that it will leave its home on 222 Sargent Dr. and will itinerantly host productions in venues across the greater New Haven area starting in the spring of 2023.
“Together, we’re building the future of Long Wharf and centering our communities as active architects along the way,” Rachel Alderman, the associate artistic director for the Long Wharf Theatre, said. “There is room for everyone, and we believe wholeheartedly in creating a theatre company of, by and for all of New Haven.”
The Long Wharf Theatre was founded in 1965 with the aim of making theater more accessible to the greater New Haven public, according to its website. Over 30 of its productions have made it to Broadway or off-Broadway theaters.
The “Home(coming)” block party will be free for the public and will take place in the city’s arts district on Audubon Street from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The theater staff will also host a farewell ceremony on Sargent Drive on Friday, Oct. 14.
