DRUMMER OF NEW HAVEN’S ‘FIVE SATINS’

Bobby Mapp, Drummer for the Five Satins of New Haven, CT., shares about his life and music with Chit Chat Communications’ own Carla Morrison during a chance meeting at “The Towers” in New Haven.
Bobby Mapp, was born and raised in New Haven, CT. A graduate of James HillHouse High School and a lover of music, Bobby played drums all his life, around town. Once Bobby joined the band of the Five Satins (in 1965), a notable soul group out of New Haven, he traveled the country, sharing his gift.
At 86, you can still find Bobby sharing his gift during special occasions and at Cafe Nine on Saturdays between 4-7pm.
We met up with Bobby last Saturday at Cafe Nine where he sat at the bar, and everyone who entered the establishment greeted him with a loving smile and conversation. We then moved to the outside patio, listening to the jam session. One bartender tried to grab Bobby to join the set, for which he declined and said, “I’ve been doing this a long time.”
