The 17th annual annual New Haven “Great Give” community-wide fundraising drive raised 20 percent of its $5 million goal with 31 hours to go.

More than 500 local nonprofits are participating in the the 36-hour drive, which is organized by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. It runs through Thursday at 9 p.m. The foundation set up this web platform for people to use to choose all the causes and groups they support and send donations. Participating groups also qualify for prizes and line up matching donors.

The foundation is looking to break its record this year by raising $5 million in the drive.

The drive hit the first $1 million mark Wednesday by 1 p.m. Around that time, members of the foundation’s busy staff took a break to perform a “Great Give”-related version of Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” on a “Great Give” radiothon hosted by WNHH FM. (Click on the above video to watch them perform.)

WNHH FM is inviting members of local nonprofits to take turns appearing on air, sing a song or recite a poem, then pitch listeners for donations. (You can watch the radiothon by scrolling down our Facebook page.)
