Fixing Fathers Brings Chess and

Community Together

By Dr. David Asbery President of Fixing Fathers, Inc.

Community spirit was alive and well at Matthew Ruoppolo Manor in New Haven, thanks to Fixing Fathers, Inc. The organization recently donated several chess sets to the residents, sparking an evening of camaraderie and friendly competition. The initiative brought tenants to the community center, where laughter, strategy, and the occasional checkmate turned an ordinary night into something memorable.

Residents embraced the opportunity to connect with one another over the timeless game, proving that even small gestures can have a big impact. Word quickly spread, and many more tenants have expressed interest in joining the fun at future chess nights. It’s a testament to what happens when community organizations and residents come together to create meaningful experiences.

Fixing Fathers, Inc. extended their gratitude to the New Haven Housing Authority for providing the space and to Street to Straight for generously purchasing the chess sets. A very special thanks goes to Brother Nathan Joyner for pulling this whole initiative together—his dedication made the event possible, fostering stronger bonds among neighbors and laying the foundation for more gatherings to come.

This effort truly embodies the power of community. It’s more than just chess—it’s about connection, collaboration, and creating spaces where people can laugh, learn, and grow together. Here’s to more nights of joyful connection at Matthew Ruoppolo Manor!
