BRIDGEPORT, CT — Declaring his intention to be Connecticut’s education governor, state Sen. Ryan Fazio declared his intention to expand access to magnet and charter schools and close the state’s achievement gap, among numerous other objectives.
Standing in front of Bridgeport’s Warren Harding High School, the Greenwich Republican said the state’s children could not afford four more years of status quo and said a child’s zip code should never determine their destiny.
“Under my administration, we will no longer accept the second-highest Black-white achievement gap in the country,” he said. “We will invest in our children and teachers, expand educational choice, raise academic standards and make sure funding reaches the students who need it most.”
The plan Fazio announced Thursday included about 20 bullet points, broadly organized into high standards, teacher development, expanded access to charter and magnet schools and embracing the federal education tax credit, and funding fairness. More specific points included adopting science-of-reading curriculum materials, a ban on smartphones in classrooms, eliminating licensing fees for teachers and rolling back or eliminating “dozens or hundreds” of unspecified state mandates on local districts.
