Latest incident comes amidst national outrage over JSO beating Deshaun Williams
The same day as renowned national civil rights attorneys Harry Daniels and Ben Crump hold a news conference to call out the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) for their violent beating of 24-year-old Black man Deshaun Williams, Daniels and Crump have released video of JSO deputies needlessly beating another Black man, 44-year-old Travis Lamar Brinkley, further demonstrating the disturbing culture of violence and brutality at JSO.
According to records, Brinkley was arrested on November 4, 2024 as part of a citywide “buy bust” operation. Body camera video of the incident, however, clearly shows that, instead of simply arresting the unarmed Brinkley, JSO deputies wearing face masks and tactical gear violently beat him while he was restrained on the ground posing no threat to anyone.
In fact, video released today shows two officers arriving on the scene and immediately beating Brinkley, striking him multiple times in the face despite the fact that he was already on the ground with his hands behind his back. The video further shows the officers appearing to celebrate having beaten Brinkley with “high fives” and “fist bumps” while Brinkley lies bleeding on the ground having suffered multiple injuries including at least one tooth knocked out by officers.
JSO never transported Brinkley to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
While deeply disturbing, this is just the latest revelation of the violent pattern of abuse at the JSO which includes November’s incident where deputies broke the jaw of 24-year-old Deshaun Williams and the beating of 22-year-old William McNeil Jr. which went viral sparking national outrage after video of the incident was posted on social media in July.
“The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is one of the most brutal and violent law enforcement departments in America and that’s saying something.,” said Daniels. “These aren’t cops. They’re thugs and it’s time to hold them accountable.”
