A Legacy That Resonates Beyond the Screen

By Dr. David Asbery President of Fixing Fathers, Inc.

The entertainment world is no stranger to loss, but the passing of Danielle Spencer feels especially profound. Best known for her iconic role as Dee on What’s Happening!!, Spencer wasn’t just an actress; she was a symbol of resilience, humor, and grace. She left an indelible mark on television and in the hearts of countless fans. For many, her life and her work are a reminder of values that seem to fade in today’s world but for me, remain eternally relevant.

The Sharp-Witted Sister We Loved

Danielle’s portrayal of Dee captured lightning in a bottle. She was the quintessential smart-aleck little sister—the one who always had a quick comeback for her brother, Raj, and his friends, Rerun, Dwayne, and Shirley. Whether she was strategically pressing her advantage in an argument or threatening to expose one of her brother’s schemes, Danielle brought a vibrancy to the character that few could replicate. Fans saw Dee as more than a sibling sparring partner. She was a beacon of wit and intelligence, and under that sassy exterior was a young girl deeply rooted in family values. While she would mercilessly roast her on-screen brother and his friends, Dee never crossed certain boundaries, especially with her mother. The character epitomized respect—a quality (when checked) she extended to her family and elders. This balance, seamlessly woven into her witty one-liners, represented a dynamic that many viewers could relate to, which is a time when humor and family discipline coexisted effortlessly. Spencer brought those nuances to life with such authenticity that it left audiences craving for more.

A Fighter Both on and Off-Screen

Danielle Spencer’s legacy extends far beyond the laughter she sparked through her character. Spencer was more than just Dee—she was a fighter. Off-screen, Danielle Spenser’s life dealt her no shortage of challenges, but her resilience was unwavering. A horrific car accident in 1977, that killed her stepfather.  Ten years later, Danielle developed a spinal condition that left her paralyzed from the waist down for months.  She faced battles with cancer, undergoing a double mastectomy in 2018. She suffered  for years with debilitating headaches before undergoing emergency brain surgery for a bleeding hematoma. Danielle navigated through all these hurdles with a courage that mirrored the soulful strength she brought to her television roles. Her life became a testament to the power of perseverance and a poignant example of finding joy, her love for animals, that propelled her to earn a veterinary Medicine doctorate degree from Tuskegee University in 1993.  Even though she is no longer with us, her presence remains alive in reruns of What’s Happening!, where she continues to wield her sharp wit and winning smile. By portraying a character who was unapologetically herself, Danielle Spencer gave us permission to celebrate our own unique voices—reminding us to laugh, love, and honor the values that matter most. To Danielle Spencer, we say thank you—not just for Dee, but for showing us what it means to face life’s challenges with grace. Most of all, thank you for the laughter and lessons you gave us. You may be gone, Danielle, but your legacy will live forever in our hearts. And we will never forget the line that brought so much joy to living rooms everywhere: Ooooh, I’m telling Mama!  Rest peacefully my little sister.  We’ll make sure that you are never forgotten.
