New Haven, CT — The public is warmly invited to celebrate the legacy of Beauty Plus, a beloved small business and pillar of downtown New Haven, at a Business Appreciation & Retirement/Closing Event on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 12:00 PM. The celebration will be held at Beauty Plus, 827 Chapel Street, and is free and open to all.
The event will be co-hosted by News Channel 8 Anchor Keith Kountz and the Veronica Douglas Media Agency.
Founded in 1995, Beauty Plus has served the New Haven community for 31 years, providing beauty products, outstanding customer service, and a strong cultural presence. Owned and operated by the husband-and-wife team Mel and Rudy Hylton, the store has become a lasting symbol of entrepreneurship, resilience, and family-run success.
Mel Hylton began her career in business at Unique Boutique, working as a bookkeeper under the late Eugene Huckabee. Over 24 years, she helped manage locations on Dixwell Avenue, Henry Street, and Chapel Street, laying the foundation for her own business journey.
As they step into retirement, the Hyltons look forward to traveling and spending quality time with their daughter, Gale Hylton-Mathews, and their grandsons, Elijah and Akiel — embracing a well-earned new chapter after decades of service to the community.
“Beauty Plus was always more than a beauty store,” said Mel Hylton, co-owner and founder. “It was about building relationships, making people feel seen, and showing the power of Black business with a diverse customer base in the heart of our city. I’m proud of what we’ve built here together.”
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker offered praise for the Hyltons’ contributions to the city:
“Beauty Plus has been an anchor in downtown New Haven for more than three decades — not just as a business, but as a welcoming space that reflects the diversity and strength of our community. Mel and Rudy Hylton are a proud example of how small businesses shape the culture and economy of our city. We thank them for their commitment, their service, and their legacy.”
The celebration will feature live music, an official city proclamation, and reflections from those whose lives have been touched by Beauty Plus. Local leaders, longtime customers, neighbors, and media are encouraged to attend this momentous occasion — a tribute to community, perseverance, and small business excellence.
