HARTFORD, CT – State officials are raising the alarm about a dangerous social media trend that has turned a seemingly harmless toy into a literal time bomb.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, was at Charter Oak Health Center to warn parents Friday afternoon about NeeDoh gel-filled squishy toys. Recent videos shared on social platforms such as Tiktok have encouraged children to place the toys in the microwave to make them more malleable.
However, the toys are not meant to be heated up. The gel inside the toy becomes superheated, and in some cases may leak or even explode, causing serious and potentially lethal burns especially to the hands and face. According to Blumenthal, at least one Connecticut child has been treated at the Connecticut Burn Center as a result of injuries sustained from an exploding NeeDoh toy.
“It may seem innocent and harmless, but this gel-filled cube, called a Nice Cube from NeeDoh, will literally explode if it reaches a certain heat,” he said while holding up one of the toys. “And so putting them in the microwave or leaving them in a heated car can expose children to an explosion that may scald them and burn them, maiming them, and sending them to the emergency room. So this innocent toy, if misused, is highly dangerous.”
