Citing fear and panic in the community, U.S. Sen. Richard is requesting a meeting with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Acting ICE Director David Venturella over the increase in immigration enforcement activity in the state over the past several weeks. The surge has focused on Danbury and nearby towns, including reports of people targeted while dropping their children off at school and going to work, Blumenthal said.
“Over the past week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have sown fear and panic among parents, children, and workers as they detained scores of people in Danbury and other towns in Connecticut,” Blumenthal wrote in a letter to the two requesting the meeting and information about the surge. “What should have been a time of excitement and community as children in Connecticut return to school has quickly turned into a time of genuine terror.”
Blumenthal said ICE’s actions in Connecticut have showcased cruelty and brutality, and “disregard for the safety and well-being of community members, especially children. They fostered an environment of fear that will undoubtedly impact school attendance rates and the emotional health of students, generally.”
Blumenthal, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has cohosted four forums over the past year as part of an ongoing inquiry into immigration agents’ tactics.
