What started as a 6:00 AM departure turned into an unforgettable 19-hour journey that brought 40 community members together to explore their rich heritage at the African American Museum in Washington, D.C. This is where community meets purpose – and what a time we had.
Learning Our Legacy
The halls of the African American Museum came alive as our group walked through exhibits that told the powerful stories of resilience, triumph, and cultural heritage. For many participants, seeing these artifacts and displays wasn’t just about learning history – it was about connecting with their roots and understanding the profound legacy that shaped their community.
From the moment we entered the museum, you could see the impact on faces throughout the group. Community members shared their own family stories, connected personal experiences to the exhibits, and discovered new chapters of history they’d never encountered before.
The museum visit reminded us all that education and connection go hand in hand. When we invest in learning about our past, we build stronger foundations for our future. After an inspiring day at the museum, we gathered at Carolina Kitchen for dinner. As we sat on the bus eating our food, this became an extension of the day’s learning – a chance to process what we’d seen, discuss what we’d learned, and strengthen the bonds within our community.
With snacks, chips, and juice provided throughout the day, we made sure everyone stayed energized for this marathon of meaningful experiences. By the time we returned home at 1:00 AM, we all were ready face our communities with a bit more motivation and pride.
A Community Effort
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from our partners and sponsors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to: United Way of New Haven, The Community Foundation, Inner City News, DCF, ION Bank, Town Fair Tire, The New Haven Housing Authority, Our dedicated chairpersons, DATTCO, Street to Straight, Grant Central Connecticut LLC, and the entire Fixing Fathers team. These organizations understand that when we invest in community education and connection, we’re investing in stronger families and a brighter future for everyone.
Looking Forward
As we reflect on this incredible experience, we’re already planning future opportunities to bring our community together around shared learning and growth. Because when community meets purpose, there’s no limit to what we can achieve together.
Thank you to everyone who made this day possible, and to the community members who embraced this journey with open hearts and curious minds. This is what building stronger families looks like – one meaningful experience at a time.
What a time we had, indeed.
